African Exporters Eye China’s Zero-Tariff Opportunity

South African experts say that the extension of China’s zero-tariff policy to 53 African countries, effective May 1, presents significant opportunities for the continent—especially if countries enhance production capacity and focus on value-added exports.

Gabila Nubong, senior lecturer at North-West University, emphasized that African nations must address structural challenges and scale up production to deliver higher-quality goods to China. He urged the Southern African Development Community to coordinate industrial policies and strengthen regional value chains to fully leverage the zero-tariff framework.

David Monyae, director of the Center for Africa-China Studies at the University of Johannesburg, described the policy as a “golden opportunity” for Africa to diversify and expand exports. Africa’s 60 percent share of the world’s uncultivated arable land offers immense potential for agricultural products, but exporters must maintain high quality and competitive pricing to succeed in China, especially given competition from Asia and Latin America.

Monyae also highlighted the need to eliminate non-tariff barriers by addressing domestic logistics and port inefficiencies to ensure smooth export operations.

Chinese Ambassador to South Africa Wu Peng encouraged African businesses to participate in trade expos, engage directly with Chinese partners, and leverage e-commerce platforms to reach China’s vast consumer market effectively.
