Record-breaking summer heat across Europe is driving strong demand for Chinese-made cooling appliances, with air conditioners, portable cooling units, ice makers, and electric fans becoming increasingly popular among European consumers.
Chinese manufacturers have responded by ramping up production and expanding exports to meet the seasonal surge, highlighting both China’s manufacturing strength and its growing role in supplying global consumer markets.
At Midea’s manufacturing base in Guangzhou, dedicated production lines are operating at full capacity to fulfill overseas orders. Portable split-type air conditioners have become one of the company’s fastest-growing export products, supported by efficient logistics through the China-Europe Railway Express, which delivers shipments in just 15 to 25 days—significantly faster than traditional sea freight.
The popularity of these products is closely tied to Europe’s housing characteristics. In many European cities, installing conventional air conditioning systems can be expensive and time-consuming due to historic building protections, strict installation regulations, and high labor costs.
To address these challenges, Midea developed a portable split-type air conditioner that requires no wall drilling or professional installation. Designed specifically for European homes, the unit can be installed in around ten minutes using a window-mounted system, making it an attractive option for apartment residents.
The company’s localization strategy has produced impressive results. Air conditioner sales in Western Europe increased by more than 70% during the first half of 2026, while sales of its portable split-type model exceeded 60,000 units in Germany alone. Annual sales across Europe are expected to reach 200,000 to 300,000 units.
The surge in demand extends beyond air conditioners. In Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, Hicon Industry Technology is producing approximately 25,000 household ice makers every day, with Europe accounting for a rapidly growing share of exports.
The company’s latest compact ice makers feature redesigned compressors that improve efficiency while reducing size and power consumption. These energy-saving appliances have gained popularity among European households looking for convenient cooling solutions during increasingly hot summers.
Strong industrial clusters have also strengthened China’s competitive advantage. In Ningbo’s Cixi manufacturing hub, nearly every component required to produce small household appliances can be sourced within a short distance, allowing companies to accelerate product development, reduce costs, and respond quickly to overseas demand.
According to customs data, Ningbo exported 2.73 billion yuan worth of cooling appliances to Europe between January and May, with ice maker exports rising 36.8% year on year. Meanwhile, Yiwu reported that exports of portable air conditioners and electric fans to Europe increased by more than 70%, making cooling appliances one of the fastest-growing categories in cross-border e-commerce.
As climate change drives more frequent heat waves across Europe, demand for efficient and affordable cooling products is expected to remain strong. Chinese manufacturers are strengthening their global competitiveness through product innovation, localized design, efficient supply chains, and faster international logistics.
