Chinese Shipyards Win Global Orders

China’s shipbuilding industry is strengthening its global leadership as shipyards secure long-term international orders through intelligent manufacturing, green technologies, and highly efficient production systems.

Driven by digital transformation and low-carbon innovation, Chinese shipbuilders are attracting overseas customers while improving productivity and reducing operating costs.

Overseas Orders Extend Through 2030

Guangzhou Shipyard International, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), currently holds nearly 100 billion yuan (US$14 billion) worth of shipbuilding contracts.

More than 95% of its orders come from overseas customers, with production schedules already extending through 2030.

Located in the Pearl River Delta, one of China’s major shipbuilding hubs, the company continues to benefit from strong international demand. In the first half of 2026, 35 newly built vessels completed export clearance through Guangzhou’s Nansha Port, representing nearly 30% year-on-year growth.

Smart Manufacturing Boosts Efficiency

Chinese shipyards are rapidly adopting intelligent manufacturing technologies to improve productivity and product quality.

At Guangzhou Shipyard, an automated production line for thin steel plate sections operates at 2.4 times the efficiency of conventional production methods. Automation has reduced staffing requirements from approximately 200 workers to about 50 per shift.

Robotic welding technology also enables extremely high precision, keeping deformation of ultra-thin steel plates within 1 millimeter, improving structural quality for advanced passenger vessels and car carriers.

Meanwhile, Hengli Heavy Industries in Dalian has introduced 10 intelligent production lines, integrating artificial intelligence throughout design, procurement, manufacturing, and quality control.

AI-powered production scheduling has reduced planning work that previously required one to two weeks to just two to three hours, significantly improving operational efficiency.

Green Ships Become Competitive Advantage

Environmental performance has become another major strength for Chinese shipbuilders.

A newly delivered 10,800-vehicle car carrier, currently the world’s largest of its type, reduces carbon emissions by more than 30% compared with conventional fuel-powered vessels.

The ship features:

  • Dual-fuel LNG and fuel-oil engines
  • Exhaust gas recirculation technology
  • High-efficiency permanent magnet shaft generator
  • Advanced energy-saving systems

Hengli Heavy Industries is also expanding production of low-carbon marine engines capable of operating on:

  • LNG
  • LPG
  • Methanol
  • Ammonia

These technologies enable vessels to meet increasingly stringent international environmental standards while preparing for future decarbonization requirements.

International Buyers Continue Expanding Orders

Chinese shipbuilders are earning repeat business from global customers through reliable delivery and competitive technology.

Hengli Heavy Industries recently delivered two 306,000-deadweight-ton very large crude carriers (VLCCs), setting a new benchmark in global shipbuilding.

Following successful deliveries, the Greek shipowner has now placed orders for more than 40 vessels, demonstrating growing international confidence in Chinese shipbuilding capabilities.

Faster Export Processes Reduce Costs

China is also improving competitiveness through more efficient logistics and customs procedures.

Nansha Port has implemented a dedicated clearance system that covers sea trials, delivery, and export departure under a streamlined process.

The system eliminates the need for secondary inspections, reducing export procedures by an average of nine hours per vessel.

Each ship saves more than 800,000 yuan in fuel, towing, and berthing expenses, while total cost savings for shipbuilders have exceeded 15 million yuan since the beginning of 2025.

China Strengthens Its Global Shipbuilding Position

The continued growth of overseas orders reflects the competitiveness of China’s shipbuilding industry.

Combining advanced manufacturing, AI-enabled production, green vessel technologies, an integrated industrial supply chain, and efficient export services, Chinese shipyards are becoming preferred partners for international shipping companies.

As demand grows for smarter and lower-emission vessels, China’s shipbuilding sector is expected to remain one of the world’s most competitive manufacturing industries.
