Meta Description: China’s railway investment reached 440.6 billion yuan in the first seven months of 2026, supporting major high-speed rail projects and long-term infrastructure development.
China continued to expand investment in its railway network during the first seven months of 2026, with major infrastructure projects progressing steadily across the country. According to China State Railway Group, fixed-asset investment in railway construction reached 440.6 billion yuan (approximately US$64.9 billion) from January to July, representing a 1.8% year-on-year increase.
The continued investment reflects China’s long-term commitment to improving transportation infrastructure while supporting regional economic development and enhancing connectivity between cities.
Several key railway projects achieved important milestones during the period. In southern China, Foshan Station officially opened as part of the Guangzhou–Zhanjiang High-Speed Railway, strengthening transportation links across Guangdong Province. In northwest China, the Xi’an–Ankang High-Speed Railway entered full-line testing, bringing the new route one step closer to commercial operation.
China State Railway Group stated that it will continue advancing major railway construction projects while improving the quality and efficiency of investment. The company believes sustained railway development will contribute to China’s broader strategy of promoting high-quality economic growth.
China currently operates the world’s largest high-speed railway network. By the end of 2025, the country’s total railway mileage had reached 165,000 kilometers, including more than 50,000 kilometers of high-speed rail. This extensive network has significantly improved passenger mobility, shortened travel times, and strengthened regional integration across the country.
Looking ahead, China plans to further expand its railway system over the next several years. By 2030, total operational railway mileage is expected to reach 180,000 kilometers, including approximately 60,000 kilometers of high-speed rail.
As investment continues and new projects move toward completion, China’s railway sector remains one of the country’s most important infrastructure priorities, supporting economic development, regional connectivity, and long-term transportation modernization.
