Hong Kong International Airport Sees Double-Digit Passenger Growth in First Half of 2026

Meta Description: Hong Kong International Airport handled 32.8 million passengers in the first half of 2026, supported by expanded flight networks, tourism growth, and new terminal facilities.

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) continued its strong recovery in 2026, recording significant growth in both passenger traffic and flight operations during the first half of the year. According to Hong Kong Financial Secretary Paul Chan, the airport handled 32.8 million passenger journeys between January and June, representing an 11.7% increase compared with the same period last year.

During the first six months of 2026, HKIA also recorded more than 200,000 aircraft movements, an increase of 4.4% year on year, reflecting the continued expansion of international air travel and airline operations.

Hong Kong’s aviation network has also become increasingly connected. Around 140 airlines now operate flights linking the city with more than 225 destinations worldwide, reinforcing Hong Kong’s position as one of Asia’s leading international aviation hubs.

According to Chan, the combination of Hong Kong’s efficient transportation system and a growing number of international exhibitions, conferences, and large-scale events has helped attract both business travelers and leisure visitors, supporting the city’s tourism recovery.

The positive momentum is reflected in overall visitor arrivals. Between January and July 2026, Hong Kong welcomed 31.22 million visitors, an increase of 12% compared with the previous year. The continued recovery in tourism is expected to create new business opportunities while providing additional support for the local economy.

Infrastructure improvements are also helping the airport accommodate future growth. The new passenger departure facilities at Terminal 2, which officially opened in May 2026, are expected to handle approximately 8 million passenger trips during their first year of operation, further increasing HKIA’s passenger handling capacity and improving the travel experience.

As international travel continues to recover, expanded airline services, upgraded airport facilities, and growing visitor numbers are expected to strengthen Hong Kong’s role as a major global aviation and transportation hub.
